Second Team Option Information
New Jersey Science Olympiad is interested in growing our program and increasing the number of students who can participate in the regional tournaments. This year, we are going to allow two teams per school to compete at the regional tournaments. In order to be fair to each school district, below are the guidelines that will govern the second team option.
1. Schools will register their first team. These teams will get their choice of regionals on a first come, first served basis, until the regional is closed due to full capacity.
2. Schools wishing to register a second team may do so. Preference will be given on a first come, first served basis. Whether this is the first or second team from a school will not be taken into consideration. Schools registering Second Teams should use the SECOND TEAM REGISTRATION FORM.
3. Deadline for regular registration is November 1st. The fee during this period for a second team is $160. Late registration starts on November 2nd and ends on November 15th. The fee during the late registration period is $195. All registration ends on November 15th.
4. Schools may register their second team for the same regional as their first team (based on site availability) or for another regional tournament location.
5. Students may only compete on ONE (1) team at the regional tournament, whether or not the two teams are competing at the same regional tournament or at different regional tournaments. Coaches may NOT mix their teams during the regional tournaments. Coaches will be required to clearly identify which of the two school teams the student belongs to. Any violation of this rule will result in a disqualification of the individual events that were involved and a possible disqualification of the entire team from the tournament.
6. Regardless of the number of teams (1 or 2) that a school registers, only ONE(1) invitation per school will be given to participate in the NJSO State Tournament, regardless of the fact that both teams may place at the regional tournament.
Example #1: Sunny Middle School registers team A and team B. Team A secures first place and Team B secures third place at the regional tournament. Sunny Middle School will only be given ONE invitation to the NJSO State Tournament. It will be up to the coach to determine which students will comprise the team and compete at the NJSO State Tournament.
Example #2 – Blueberry High School registers team A and team B. Team A secures first place, but Team B comes in 20th place at the regional tournament. Blueberry High School will be given ONE (1) invitation to the NJ Science Olympiad State Tournament. The coach may still determine which students from the two teams will comprise the team that competes at the NJSO State Tournament.
7. Invitations to the NJSO State Tournament will be offered to the teams ranking in the top 50% of each regional tournament, with adjustments made in congruence with the above stipulations. If a school has two teams that rank in the top 50%, they will receive only ONE invitation to the NJSO State Tournament. The next highest ranked school at the tournament will then be offered an invitation. It is therefore possible, that a school that ranks 11th out of a field of 20 teams will receive an invitation to the NJSO State Tournament.
New Free Student Resource for Anatomy & Physiology Events
The Society for Neuroscience has launched a new Web site: NERVE (Neuroscience Education Resources Virtual Encycloportal) at http://www.sfn.org/nerve. NERVE is a dynamic new online gateway to information and tools for learning and teaching about the brain and nervous system created specifically for K-12 students and educators.
Many resources from NERVE are also available in a convenient CD-ROM version which is available as a download or can be shipped in quantities---all for FREE! Use and distribute the CD at regional coaches clinics. Contact Nadine Costello to request copies of the CD. Mention your affiliation with the Science Olympiad and SfN will send you copies of the CD absolutely free of charge. For more neuroscience education resources from SfN, go to http://www.sfn.org/so.
Tournament Schedules and Team Numbers
There is a separate tournament schedule for each regional. The schedules in the back of the Division B and Division C Rules Manuals are only for the National tournament.
Numbers in the blocks on the schedule for each tournament correspond to the team number assigned when you registered a Science Olympiad team.
Teams that advance to the State Finals tournament will be assigned a new team number after responding to an invitation to compete at States.
Clarification about alternates and on the number of students required for each event.
Teams are not required to have 2 members compete in each event. Event rules specify up to 2, or up to 3, or up to 4. Smaller teams may send only a single member to compete in any event if they do not have a full complement of 18 team members.
There is no specific number of alternates that coaches may include on a team. Teams may have as many alternates as are needed to be compete in trial events as well as additional alternates to substitute for any regular team members if any of them should become ill on the day of the competition.
Division B alternates may be 9th grade students in addition to the already allowed number on the regular team.
Division C alternates may be seniors in addition to the 7 seniors already allowed on the regular team.
EpiChallenge Trial event - Division C
Up to 4 alternates may compete in the EpiChallenge event. For smaller teams, a single alternate or regular team member may compete in the Epi Challenge event.
Teams may add 4 alternates to compete in the EpiChallenge event in addition to the alternates already on a team.
Medals and ribbons will be awarded to students competing in the EpiChallenge event. Points will be awarded at each regional and included in the total team scores as indicated on the first page (bullet number 5) of the EpiChallenge event rules.
