2009 Science Olympiad Summer Fun Camps for Middle and High School Students

Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana

Indiana University in Bloomington offers Science Olympiad Summer Fun Camps – week-long residential camps for students entering 6th through 12th grades. These camps are designed to increase student interest and competence in hands-on science activities in a relaxed, safe and fun atmosphere. Participants do not have to be on a Science Olympiad team at school to enroll.

Middle School Camp: July 12-18, 2009
High School Camp: July 19-25, 2009

The materials posted on the Scrambler Event Page have been updated for 2009. This included an updated evaluation sheet, event clarifications and a summary of the rules changes for 2009.

There are many rules changes for this event in 2009. Please review the rules carefully. The rules will be strictly followed in New Jersey.

Team List Must Be Submitted Day of Tournament

Upon arrival on the day of each tournament, each school MUST turn in a team list dated and signed by the head coach and school principal. Click on the page for the tournament in which your school is participating and then on the link for the team list template. Each team must turn in a completed form in order to compete in the tournament for which they have registered. Team List Templates can be found on the Coaches section of this website.

The Society for Neuroscience has launched a new Web site: NERVE (Neuroscience Education Resources Virtual Encycloportal) at http://www.sfn.org/nerve. NERVE is a dynamic new online gateway to information and tools for learning and teaching about the brain and nervous system created specifically for K-12 students and educators.

Many resources from NERVE are also available in a convenient CD-ROM version which is available as a download or can be shipped in quantities---all for FREE! Use and distribute the CD at regional coaches clinics. Contact Nadine Costello to request copies of the CD. Science Olympiad Finalists Win Big Prizes in Discovery YSC

Congratulations to Melissa Rey of Missouri, the winner of the 2008 Discovery Young Scientist Challenge! The three Science Olympians in the Top 10 won a variety of fantastic prizes in addition to $1,000 and a trip to Washington, DC - Avni Bavishi of IL received a two-week trip to Forensics Summer Camp in New York, Peter Ku of NJ won a visit to 3M's Global Innovation Center and labs and James Kruse of MN will take a trip to San Francisco's Treasure Island to meet with Discovery engineers on "Prototype This"! We are so proud of each student's creativity, knowledge and ability! In a new partnership between Science Olympiad and Discovery Education, all 2008 Science Olympiad State Tournament-qualifying Division B (middle school) teams were invited to send in 90-second digital video entries about the science of space to the YSC competition. Of the 44 semi-finalists announced in July, 10 were from Science Olympiad. Click here to see all the entries and to find out more about the Discovery Young Scientist Challenge! NJSO Announces simplified registration process for 2009

NJSO will collect both the $100 State registration fee and the $60 National membership fee for the 2009 middle/high school tournaments. This change will be reflected on the 2009 school registration form that will be posted on the website on September 5, 2008. NJSO will mail the appropriate Coaches Manual and Event Rules booklet directly to teams resulting in a more timely distribution of the booklets.

New Jersey Teams Successful at National Tournament

The Community MS from the West Windsor-Plainsboro school district and West Windsor-Plainsboro HS North brought home the 9th place team trophies as well as numerous individual medals from the 24th Annual National Science Olympiad tournament that was held this past weekend at The George Washington University. Community MS placed ninth out of 60 teams from 46 states in the middle school division and WWP-HS North placed ninth out of 60 teams from 46 states in the high school division. Please join NJ Science Olympiad in congratulating both teams on their superb academic success.

Grant available for Wright Stuff and other flight related events

Alcoa Corporation has given the AMA ( American Modelers Association) a grant with monies for teams participating in the Science Olympiad flying events and working through a local AMA chartered Club. The program is a new program known as Youth Education Stipend (YES).

The application deadline is Jan.1, 2009. Awards will be made in February, 2009. Teams must work through an AMA chartered model airplane club. Grants up to $750 may be provided for model airplane kits, glue, pins, x-acto knives and other related supplies.
